Diesel-Electric Audi Supercar To Take On McLaren P1

More details emerge on Audi’s rumored diesel-electric super car, and apparently it is going to be sicker than we first thought. The boss of Audi Quattro GmbH, the man in charge of making the car, says it will be even better than the upcoming McLaren P1, which is considered by many as the ultimate hypercar.

That’s a rather bold claim, especially when the main source of power in this car is going t be a diesel engine. It is not any old diesel, though. It is in fact a civilian version of the same diesel-hybrid racing powertrain that won Audi this year’s Le Mans race.

Performance numbers are yet to be revealed – well, the car itself is yet to get the greenlight – but sources say Audi’s supercar will make 700 horsepower and over a 1000 Nm of torque. It will do well over 200 mph, and the 0 to 60 sprint takes no more than 3 seconds.

Audi has tried once before to make a road-going version of its successful diesel race car with the R8 V12 TDI Concept, but it didn’t work. This new car is going to be totally different than the R8.

As Quattro boss Franciscus Van Meel told AutoExpress: “If we make this car it will be the absolute best supercar, and completely different in concept to the R8,” Van Meel told us. “It will be very Vorsprung Durch Technik, very innovative.
