Making bespoke models for Popes is one of those opportunities that every car maker is keen to jump on. It is great publicity for their brand, and it also improves their image. Mercedes Benz has always been great at this, and continues to be by giving Pope Benedict XVI a new popemobile based on the 2013 Mercedes M-Class.

As with other popemobiles, the car has a sort of glass room at the back where the big man seats in a throne-like chair as he goes for a ride around Vatican. The new model has a larger passenger area than the previous one, so Pope can easily stand up in official ceremonies.

The new car also comes with thicker bulletproof glass for Pope’s security, and an advanced air conditioning system for his comfort. What’s more, it is lower than Pope’s old M-Class, so getting in and out of it is easier for the old man.

No word on the car’s technical details, but chances are it’s not the ML63 AMG. The noise that car makes is wildly inappropriate for a popemobile!
