At the Geneva Motor Show next month Audi will present their new plug-in hybrid hatchback that is going to take the market by storm, offering an incredible fuel economy of 188 mpg or 1.5 liters / 100 km. The new member of the e-tron family is based on the five-door Audi A3.
The A3 e-tron features a plug-in hybrid system consisting of petrol engine and an electric motor. You can either charge the batteries via an outlet, or let the engine do the task as you are driving along on petrol.
The gasoline engine in this car is a 150 PS 1.4 liter TFSI unit and it’s mated to a 75kw electric motor integrated into a newly designed six-speed ‘e-S tronic’ transmission. With a total output of 204 PS and 350 torque, the A3 e-tron is capable of hitting 62 mph from standing still in 7.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 138mph.
The most number regarding this car is the 188 mpg fuel economy, only bested by the CO2 emission of 35 g/km. What’s more, you get 31 miles of zero-emission electric drive on one charge at speeds of up to 80mph.
Audi A3 e-tron Hybrid offers the best compromise between performance and economy. It won’t be cheap, but given what it delivers, it is going to be worth the asking price.
