One of the finest cars launched in recent years – and possibly all time – was without the doubt the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, or the 1M Coupe in short. The only problem with it was limited production. They only built it from 2011 to 2012, and then it was gone. Now though, news emerge that BMW is working on a successor for the 1M.
That is what BMW M boss Friedrich Nitschke confirmed in an interview. They will definitely make a new rear-drive, compact and powerful coupe, but no date has been set. That brings us to the issue of naming. Will it be called the 1M or the 2M?
As you know, BMW is implementing a new naming policy to simply its lineup. The 3 Series, for example, belongs to the sedan and touring models from now on, and the sporty models will be called the 4 Series. The same will happen to the 1 Series. That moniker will be used for the hatchbacks, while sporty versions like the 1M will be called the 2 Series.
Sounds complicated, but it is actually good news. We know for a fact that the 2 Series is getting a whole new design. So the new 1M, or whatever it’s called, is not going to be based on the goppingly awful 1 Series hatchback.
