The new generation Mercedes S-Class, as you may know, is going to have a couple of different variants, to be revealed gradually over the next few years. It is going to have a full lineup of models including the sedan, AMG sedans, Coupe and Cabrio, AMG version of those, and a Pullman limo variant, which will be the new Maybach.

So time is of the essence, hence the arrival of the new S63 AMG model sooner than anticipated. It would usually take a year or so for AMG to come up with an AMG version of a new model, but in the case of the new S-Class, only a few weeks after the normal model they are ready to launch the S63.

Mercedes Benz decided to keep the 63 nomenclature, even though almost all the cars in their new lineup are powered by the 5.5 liter biturbo engine, and therefore should get the 55 moniker. The S63 too will be powered by the M157 unit, almost certainly in two normal and Sport Pack guises, with 520 and 560 horsepower outputs respectively.
