Daimler’s unsuccessful attempt to revive the ultra-luxe Maybach brand a few years ago ended up badly, with the brand getting killed off again and billions of dollars lost in development and marketing. They are not giving up, though, and will have another attempt at taking on the super luxury segment with a brand-new model.

This time they are playing it safe. The Maybach replacement will not be a bespoke car, but rather a jumped-up S-Class, or a Super S-Class if you will. That was what most people thought of the Maybach in its day; a larger S-Class with a reclining seat at the back. So it was hard to justify paying half a million dollar for something that never felt as special as a Phantom, or even the Flying-Spur Bentley at the time.

That won’t be the case with the Super S-Class. Not that it will be very special. In fact, Mercedes has given up making it special. Instead, it will be offered at a more reasonable price than its British rivals. The Super S is expected to cost between $200k to $250K.

Compared to a normal Mercedes S-Class, the Super S will benefit from special interior appointments and tons of technology and convenience features. It will also be longer – the Pullman version – resulting in a lounge-like cabin for the rear passengers.
