So earlier today we showed you the official pictures of the all-new Mercedes GLA Class, and now we have the details and specs of the car for you. Based on the A Class and slotting below the GLK, this compact crossover is set to take the market by storm in early 2014.

The GLA measures at 4,417 x 1,804 x 1,494 millimetres (length x width x height). It is based on the same platform that spawned the new A and B Class, so it is fairly lightweight and has a good drag coefficient of 0.29, both of which make it very fuel efficient.

The car has a flexible interior like that of a hatchback with the backseat capable of folding flat, increasing the luggage space from 420 liters to 837 liters. The GLA might be small, but it is still a Mercedes-Benz, which means you get a fabulous cabin with luxurious trims and the latest safety and convenience features. There is even a luggage compartment option that adds another 60 liters to that 830 by changing the position of the rear seats.

The GLA will be available with a multitude of diesel and petrol engines. At launch, you get the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines with 156 hp in the GLA 200 and 211 hp in the GLA 250, and two 2.2 litre diesel: GLA 200 CDI with 136 hp and maximum torque of 300 Nm, and GLA 220 CDI with 170 hp and 350 Nm. A new generation of Mercedes 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is available. All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual transmission or the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission.

The fastest model, GLA 250 4MATIC, sprints from zero to 62 mph in only 6.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 145 mph, while returning nearly 40 mpg. The diesels are more economical, naturally, with the GLA 200 CDI capable of achieving 65.6 mpg on the combined cycle, and 114 g CO2/km.

Prices and specs for different markets will be released closer to launch in 2014. In the meantime the GLA is gearing up for its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
