The auto industry is moving ahead at an incredible speed. It feels like yesterday when Volkswagen unveiled the new generation Golf Mk7. Then came the brilliant GTi version, and now, a few weeks a ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, they unveil the new 2014 VW Golf R – the hottest factory-tuned version of the Golf.
As you’d expect from a new model that proceeds a fine car such as the Golf R, it boasts even greater numbers. The engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit that produces 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque. It comes as standard with the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, which, when paired with the 6-speed DSG transmission, takes the Golf R from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and returns average fuel economy of 40.9 MPG.
Fortunately, they do still offer a manual, even though it is not just as good performance-wise. The manual Golf R has a 5.3 seconds 0-100 km/h time, and does 38.9 MPG.
2014 VW Golf R features a sportier suspension setup than the GTI with specially tuned springs and dampers, and a ride height that’s 20 mm lower than that of the standard Golf and 5 mm lower than the GTI’s. Steering system is the same progressive unit found in the GTI, and Adaptive Chassis Control is available as an option.
Distinguishing the Golf R is a unique body kit, standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres, and black-painted brake calipers with R logo, as well as smoked LED tail lights, an ‘R’ diffuser and four chrome-tipped exhaust pipes. Inside you get sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters, and an R-specific instrument panel.
