Audi is adding a new Eco-friendly line to their range, known as the “ultra”. In the same way the S Line is all about making Audis sporty and more fun, the ultra Line has one purpose: to make them more fuel efficient. The first model from the new line is the Audi A3 1.6 TDI ultra.

So let’s cut to the chase and see what sort of numbers the A3 ultra is promising. Powered by an 81 kW (110 hp) 1.6 liter TDI diesel engine, this hatchback – available as three and five-door versions – goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and flat out does 200 km/h. Not very intriguing, is it? The next part though, that might grab your attention.

Audi says this A3 is capable of averaging 3.2 liter per 100 km, which is about 73 US mpg, and 88 UK mpg. Thanks to a 50 liter fuel tank, the car has a theoretical range of 1,500 km (932 miles), which is simply astonishing.

And it is a full car. They haven’t skimped on equipment or fitted it with ridiculously skinny tires or anything. You get air conditioning, Audi radio and power windows. It also looks like a normal A3, even though some of the panels are optimized and the ride height is adjusted. Those are some of the fuel-saving measures characteristic of the ultra Line. The 1,250 kg A3 ultra gets S line side sills and the suspension is lower than normal models by 15mm.

Prices for the Audi A3 1.6 TDI ultra start at 25,200 euros i Germany, where it will hit the showrooms in September. Prices and availability in other markets are yet to be revealed.
