BMW finally released the first official details of the M version of the 3-Series F30 model. With this they are confirming, officially, the M4 name for the coupe version, and the M3 for the sedan. They also reveal the technical specs and the power output of the new models.

2013 BMW M3 and M4 are powered by the same powertrain, which is a high-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. They say it makes 430 horsepower and beyond 500 Nm of torque. But the way we know BMW, they tend to underestimate themselves. But even this number is higher than what the previous V8 managed. And the new I6 unit is 25 percent more fuel efficient.

The fuel economy is all down to the new engine though, as the car itself has shed a couple of stones. The 2013 B M3 and M4 weigh around 1,500 kilograms. They also feature cleverer aerodynamics, new suspension, wheels and tires. Despite all the changes, BMW promises the essence of the M3 is maintained in the new cars. It is still a highly emotional, if slightly geeky, sports saloon with excellent handling.

“Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept;” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. “The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy. The engine is the heart of every M model, and the example fitted in the two new cars combines the virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths of turbocharger technology.”
