The new Volkswagen Golf R is all set for its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in a few days. After the success of the new generation Golf GTI, which exceeded all expectations with its fine blend of sport, comfort, and driving fun, everybody is excited to sample the new ‘R’, which is way more powerful.
But it’s not just raw power that sets the 2014 Volkswagen Golf R apart. The car offers a totally different experience since it comes 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. You kind of need AWD when your are dealing with 296 Horsepower to make the most of it.
That power, along with 280 lb-ft. of toque is sourced from a 2.0 liter TSI turbo engine. It offers 30 more hp than the previous version, while being 18 per cent more fuel-efficient. It enables teh little hatchback to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
In terms of driving dynamics, while yo can choose between a manual gearbox and a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission, 2014 Volkswagen Golf R comes as standard with variable-ratio “progressive” steering, and 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres to ensure maximum grip regardless of the condition.
Visually, Golf R gets its own unique character with distinctive air intakes; specially designed bumpers and side sills; and, its dual-branch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes. One would argue that it is not as good-looking as the GTI, but the way it looks has a subtle elegance to it that is charming.
