Caterham Seven 165 600x400 at IAA Preview: Caterham Seven 165 Prototype

Caterham revealed the first teaser shot of its new entry-level Seven ahead of the car’s official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by a three-cylinder, 660cc Suzuki engine, this cheap and supposedly cheerful model is called the Caterham Seven 165.

The name can be misleading to those who don’t know their Caterhams, as they might think it is named so because it has 165 horsepower. But it doesn’t. What it has is a measly 80bhp and 107 Nm of torque. What’s more, that small Suzuki K6A engine is turbocharged. So you have to take into account a considerable amount of lag as well.

These are all off-putting details, but chin up, because the next bit is good news. The Caterham Seven 165 will start from under £17,000. What it is, essentially, is a cheap track toy for your weekends. Production of the Caterham Seven 165 is expected to begin in January 2014, with first deliveries later that Spring.
