Honda announced the launch of a new open-top sports-type mini-vehicle in form of the S660 Concept at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. Despite its size and proportions, some say this is a preview of the next generation S2000.
The Honda S660 harks back to the Sports 360 of the Seventies, a small sports model that was the base for Honda’s first production sports cars, and is considered as the stepping stone for Honda’s automobile business. Replica models of the early S600 and S800 models will also be shown at Tokyo Motor Show.
The timing couldn’t be better for Honda to revive its spots car with a S2000 replacement. The never-ending success of the Mazda MX-5, and more recently the Toyota GT86, proved that there is always a market for small, affordable sports cars. And that’s what Honda is very good at.
Besides the S660 Concept, Honda will also show at Tokyo the MC-? – A micro-sized short distance EV commuter which will be used in field tests jointly with local governments; RA271 – Honda’s first F1 machine raced in the Formula One World Championship in 1964; and a couple of motorcycles. The new NSX Concept will also make it Japanese debut during the show.
