Mitsubishi proudly announced that the production of their Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV is well underway at Okazaki plant and the car will soon hit the European market, offering an unrivalled level of efficiency in the SUV segment. So let’s see what sort of numbers they are claiming.

On paper, all seems well about the Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid. The car features the first application of self-power generating Twin Motor (permanent) 4WD system, and although it weighs over 1,800 kg, the fuel economy records are astonishing.

In pure electric mode, the electric motors in the Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid can move the car about at a decent pace for up to 52 km. In hybrid mode, maximum driving range is 824 km. Fuel consumption is simply brilliant, at 1.9 liter/100 km with 44 g/km CO2 emission.

On the downside, the performance is not what you call brisk. Acceleration to 100 km/h is so shabby they decided not to measure it, and the top speed is 170 km/h. What’s more, the Outlander Hybrid does not look very interesting, even for a hybrid car.

The car’s rather practical though. Cargo volume is 463 liters with rear seats up; maximum towing capacity is 1,500 kg; and as for charging, it takes 5 hours using a normal 230V / 10A outlet, while a CHAdeMO quick charger can get it up to 80 percent in 30 minutes.
