Volkswagen UK announced they are now taking orders for the new 2014 Golf R, the range-topping 300 PS hot hatch. The R comes in three- and five-door versions, and with manual or DSG transmission. It joins the Golf’s hot lineup which includes GTI and GTD. There is something for everyone.
2014 Golf R bids farewell to the six-cylinder engine of the previous generations in favour of a 2.0 liter four-cylinder with a turbocharged EA888. It is the same basic engine you find in the Golf GTI, but thanks that turbo, as well as a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves, it makes 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque.
Zerto to 60 mph in the Golf R takes 5.3 seconds with the manual gearbox and 4.9 seconds with the DSG, while the top speed of both models is limited to 155 mph. As for the fuel economy, you can count on 39.8 mpg (40.9 mpg DSG), and CO2 emissions of 165 g/km (159 g/km DSG).
What really sets the Golf R apart from its rivals is a Haldex 4MOTION four-wheel drive system. It can deliver up to 100 percent of the power to the rear axle, so the car is still plenty fun to drive. Golf R also features sport suspension that is 5mm lower than the GTI with Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) plus a Race Mode.
Prices for the 2014 Golf R start at £29,900 for the three-door model with six-speed manual gearbox, and £31,315 for the three-door with six-speed DSG gearbox. The five-door versions cost £30,555 and £31,970 respectively.
