Many years ago Volkswagen came up with a crossover, sort of off-roady version of their recently revived Beetle. They showed the concept at a few motor shows, and then everybody forgot about it. Until now. At this year’s Detroit Auto Show Volkswagen will reveal a brand-new Beetle Dune Concept based on the latest version of the iconic car.
The new Dune Buggie Beetle features properly jacked-up suspension, large wheels fitted inside massively flared wheel arches, and underbody protection elements, presumably made from stainless steel. The car certainly looks very cool – at least in the pictures. Although, it would be a lot nicer if it was a cabrio.
Inside the VW Beetle Dune Concept features yellow accenting and trims as an homage to the original Dune Concept, but the rest of appear to be identical to the normal Beetle. Maybe it’s because of this similarity that there are rumors flying around that this time Volkswagen is put this concept into production. It could be on track for a 201 launch.
The Beetle Dune Concept is powered by VW Group’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed DSG transmission. It doesn’t have four-wheel-drive.
