It’s spring time, almost, and a lot of people are thinking about getting a convertible to enjoy alfresco motoring in the crisp and refreshing weather for months to come. Those looking into the luxury segment will undoubtedly come across the Mercedes SL63 AMG and Jaguar XKR-S Convertible. To help you decide which one to go for, Evo Magazine’s Jethro Bovingdon took them to the race track and put them through the wringer.
Granted, track work is not what these cars are made for, but given how much they cost and the number of horses living under their bonnets, they better be damn good at it. Let’s find out:
Just to recap, the advantages of the Mercedes SL63 AMG include a more refined engine, more predictable handling, and of course, a brilliant folding hardtop. The Jaguar meanwhile is pretty good fun round corners since it is so loose at the back. But that could become weary after a while, especially if you are trying to set a lap time. The XKR is also looking quite old these days. It is in fact being gradually phased out by Jaguar. So take that into account if you want to get the big cat.
