If you look at Peugeot’s motorsport history, you realize they have always had issues with traction. Their attempts at circuit racing never really paid off, but every time they tried rallying, they’ve been hugely successful. So they decided to keep pursuing what they’re good at, expanding it into new territory with a Rally Dakar entry in 2015.

The team behind Peugeot’s Rally Dakar return next year is the same team that brought them an almost unbeatable Pikes Peak record last year, Peugeot Sport, Red Bull and Total.

The job of driving is entrusted to Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres. They also had Sebastian Loeb, who is mighty quick, but not exactly built for 10,000km of the world’s longest and toughest cross-country rally. Peugeot Sport will devise a number of tests and competitions to warm up the drivers in the run-up to the 2015 event, and also let them get to grip with the car they will be driving at the big event, the new 2008 DKR.

Peugeot has a long and glorious history with Rally Dakar, having won the event four times from 1987 until 1990, first with the 205 T16 Grand Raid, then with the 405 T16 Grand Raid. Details of the 2008 DKR are yet to be revealed. But if it’s anything like the 208 T16 that ripped through the Pikes Peak like a bullet, it is going to be quite something.
