Right now if you want a fast version of the Mercedes C-Class, your only choice is the C63 AMG version – the previous generation, mind you, as the new one has not yet been revealed. But from 2015 Mercedes is introducing a new version that will bridge the gap between the mediocre C400 V6 and the range-topping C63 AMG V8.
It will be called the Mercedes C450 AMG Sport, and following the new engine program Daimler is applying to update their lineup, it will boast a twin-turbo V6 engine instead of the old 3.5 liter naturally-aspirated unit.
The new engine is a 3.0 liter unit boosted by two turbochargers to develop more than 370 horsepower. It begs the question why would you want to spend more and buy a C63, because the performance difference will not be that great.
What’s more, the Mercedes C450 AMG Sport will come in both rear- and all-wheel-drive guises, while the C63 will only be available with RWD. Of course, the full-fat AMG version will be quicker, sportier, and more luxurious. But then the C450 will be more efficient and cheaper to run. That is not an argument you can ignore these days. Economy matters, even when we’re talking about performance cars.
