Toyota recently revealed their new Le Mans contender, the TS040 Hybrid sports car, which is set to take on rivals from Porsche and Audi at this year’s Big Race. On this occasion the Toyota Motorsport GmbH museum put together a special display of the brand’s Le Mans heritage, dating back to early 90s.

Among the cars on display you notice the 1993 Toyota TS010 sporting racing number #36, TS020, also known as the GT-One, which competed in 98 and 99 24 Hour of Le Mans, and the 2012-spec TS030 Hybrid which was driven to a trio of WEC wins by Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima, but couldn’t beat the mighty Audi at the main event.

But the most interesting item at Toyota Motorsport GmbH museum must be the ‘production’ TS020 GT-One. Back in 1998 a small number of production cars had to be made to meet the rules and regulations of the GT1 class, and so these road-going versions were produced. These cars are, in effect, Toyota’s first proper super cars.

Toyota has high hopes for the TS040 and its advanced super-capacitor-based hybrid powertrain to hold its own at this year’s 24 hours of Le Mans. Will they be able to put an end to Audi’s reign? That remains to be seen. For now, tour the Motorsport GmbH Museum in these pictures:
