Mercedes-Benz is revamping the engine lineup for the SL-Class, giving the luxury roadster more oomph. Yesterday they announced the new SL 400, powered by a 4.0 liter bi-turbo V6 engine, as the replacement for the SL 350. And now they are revising the 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8 in the SL63 AMG in order to boost its output.

The current Mercedes SL63 AMG is no slouch with 535 horsepower. It is, in fact, one of the fastest open-top cars in the world. But AMG has an insatiable thirst for power, and so they are increasing the output of the M157 engine to 577 bhp – around 585 hp.

The optional AMG Performance Pack will be dropped when the new engine is introduced. Nobody is going to miss it though, as the enhanced powertrain is 20 bhp more powerful than the current Performance Pack-enabled engine.

Apart from the engine, the revised Mercedes SL63 AMG will also get a mechanical locking differential as standard. There are also rumors about the SL getting a mild but much needed facelift, but nothing is certain for now. The car is apparently set for a complete makeover in 2020, so chances are we will see one or two revisions until then.
