While the standard Volkswagen was celebrated for its 40th birthday with a rather dismal concept car, the high-performance R version got a brand-new version at the Beijing Auto Show which is far more interesting. And now rumors has it VW’s top brass has confirmed it for production.
We are indeed talking about the magnificent Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept, a thoroughly upgraded version of the existing Golf R with 100 more horsepower and exclusive interior and exterior appointments.
Golf R 400 gets a tuned version of the same 2.0 liter turbocharged four-pot in the normal Golf R with 400 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. Distributed between all four wheels via a DSG six-speed transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive, that power takes the R 400 from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 280 km/h.
Volkswagen has not yet commented on this, but chances are the production will be limited in numbers. They may also dial down the visual drama in the production Golf R 400.
