Just out of the blue, Audi released an updated version of the R8 V10 which is not only the most powerful version of the car to date, it is also the world’s first production car with laser headlights. Looks like Audi beat BMW in launching a production car with laser high beam lighting as standard.

The Audi R8 LMX showcased in these press pictures is finished in blue, and that is sort of an homage to the car’s laser headlights. The light emitted by laser beams before they pass through a phosphor converter is blue. Alternatively, you can order the LMX in Daytona Grey matt or Mythos Black.

The new laser headlights in the R8 LMX are inspired by that of the racing cars namely the R18 e-tron. They consist of one laser module per all-LED headlight, the system has a complex and boring way of operating, but the upshot is that it enhances the driver’s view and reduces fatigue. It also comes with an intelligent camera-based sensor system detects other road users and actively adjusts the light pattern to avoid dazzle.

As for the specs of the car, Audi R8 LMX boasts 570PS and 540Nm and does 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 198mph. It comes with 19-inch, 20-spoke wheels carbon ceramic brakes, and an aero kit including a fixed rear spoiler. R8 LMX is priced from £160,025 in the UK and €210,000 in Germany.
