This could be one of those rumors that cause a bit of a stir and then fade away, but at least it does renew the hopes of those who are still waiting for Honda to make a new sports car. It is about the Japanese company’s plans to revive the S2000 over the next three years, and for the moment it is just that, a rumor.
Honda S2000 was killed off in 2009 after a fruitful 10-year career. It was a time of eco-mentalism and so the company was focusing all its resources on developing new hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells. And so the plans for a S2000 successor were binned.
These days the sports car fever is once again spreading across the auto world and everybody wants a piece. Honda, being an experienced player in this segment, is putting together a pretty awesome lineup of sports cars which will include the compact S660 and the high-end NSX, with the new 2000 squeezed in the middle.
The new Honda S2000 will be powered by a tuned version of the same 2.0 liter turbo engine you find in the Civic Type R with up to 350 horsepower. There is also a possibility that gets a hybrid powertrain developed jointly by Honda and McLaren. Such a thing would make the S2000 pretty fast, but also pretty expensive.
