Rolls-Royce is seriously working on a Sport Utility Vehicle and it is set to be released in 2017, according to insider reports. The Rolls-Royce SUV is still just a sketch, but the company’s top brass is fairly determined to launch the car to rival the upcoming Bentley SUV.

The Rolls-Royce SUV will be closer in character to the Ghost rather than the Phantom, and it will features a cool and modern design. The designers want to create something functional and not just a jacked-up Roller that has limited capabilities. Sources in Rolls-Royce have described the SUV as a plus-sized Mercedes GLK.

BMW, the owner of Rolls-Royce, has already confirmed the launch of a new full-size SUV called X7, and this could provide a good platform for RR to work on. BMW is also preparing a much more advanced architecture for the next-gen Ghost, featuring carbon fiber, steel, and aluminum, which could also underpin the SUV.

Designed to appeal mainly to young Chinese entrepreneurs, who make up the bulk of the brand’s customers, the Rolls-Royce SUV is expected to cost around £200,000. It is part of a four-year plan which calls for a Ghost Facelift, which is already revealed, a new Phantom in 2017, and all-new Ghost in 2018.
