When we first saw BMW i8 as a concept we thought there is no chance they make it as a production model. It just looked too futuristic and otherworldly. But they did, in pretty much the exact same shape. The car is now passing its final tests before mass production commences and we see it regularly on our roads.

So now is probably a good time to start warming up to the car, and we can do that by seeing more pictures of it in the real world. Here’s a white BMW i8 recently spotted in Karlsruhe, Germany. It’s a pre-production test unit, but it does a good job of showcasing the car’s amazing design. The first prototypes we saw in grey/blue combo looked a bit, well, geeky, to be honest. This plain white one though, it’s fantastic.

BMW i8 is a 2+2 sports coupe weighing nearly 1,500 kg. It’s a hybrid electric with a three-cylinder turbo unit as the main source of power, complemented by a couple of electric motors. The internal combustion unit makes 164 kW and 300 Nm, and the electric motors generate 96 kW and 250 Nm. That is enough power to get you from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. But it’s fuel consumption that is the most mind-boggling number the i8 delivers: 2.7 l/100 km (104 mpg imp) with 66 g/km CO2.
