This year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, which kicks off next week, is shaping up to be an absolute treat for the fans of classic BMWs. Yesterday we told you about a gorgeous Alpina 2002ti seto to take the event by storm. Today we have this, the iconic BMW 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’.

The original CSL was the first cars to be developed under the new BMW Motorsport GmbH subsidiary in 2972. It was also the first to sport the new official colors of BMW Motorsport—red, violet and blue. Since then the CS badge has only been used a couple of times for a number of very important special edition models.

The name CSL is short for CS Coupe Lightweight which reveals the car’s production-based origins and its purpose. It was developed to race in Group 2 through Group 5 European touring car series. The racing car set for Monetrey is powered by a 440-hp 24-valve inline 6-cylinder fuel injection engine and is currently in pristine condition thanks to a thorough restoration. It should be in good condition, because the man driving the BMW 3.0 CSL at Laguna Seca is Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO of BMW of North America.

Luwig commented: “BMW fans and I have a very emotional attachment to this important car in the history of the BMW brand in the US. I’m honored to take the wheel that has been held by the great heroes like Posey, Stuck and Redman to demonstrate the car for the fans at this historic track and event.”
