BMW i8 is kind of a big deal right now, so naturally the German car maker likes to make a bit of a fuss every time they deliver a bunch of them to the customers. A couple of months ago they threw a party for the first European customers. Now they are celebrating the delivery of the first US-spec i8s at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
In fairness though, both the car and the people who bought it are worthy of such grand gesture. BMW i8 is an engineering marvel which, for the first time, successfully combined fuel efficiency with fully satisfactory sports car performance. It is the closest thing we currently have to the car of the future.
The car is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph. it does that while managing to return a fuel consumption of 76 MPGe, and that’s the brilliant part. BMW i8 costs $135,700, which is about the same as a Porsche 911.
BMW also brought to Pebble Beach a one-off BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition which was auctioned off by Jay Leno for $825K, benefiting Pebble Beach foundation.
