Volkswagen has always been good at making fast versions of ordinary family cars. There are plenty of examples we can mention, but to cut a long story short, we only say two words: Mk1 GTI. It is high time they applied the magic to the humdrum Passat.

They do have some plans to do so and make a Passat R, but these plans are not definite. In an effort to bump start VW’s efforts, designer X-Tomi has now come up with a visual rendition of an R400 version of the Passat inspired by the Golf R400 concept.

The superb looks of this Volkswagen Passat R 400 and the prospect of having a high-performance sedan with a deceivingly sober character is of course very intriguing. But the best thing about this rendering is that it is awfully close to reality. VW has all the ingredients. they just have to mix them up.

A production Volkswagen Passat R could be powered by the same engine they put in the Golf R and benefit from the same 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. Subaru has been using this formula with great success for years. VW can easily have a piece of that pie if they try.
