A Ferrari 250 California Spyder SWB, found last year rusting away in a barn somewhere in France, has just been sold for $23 million USD at Artcurial’s Retromobile auction. That makes this Cali the fifth most expensive car ever sold.

The story of this Ferrari 250 California is an amazing one. The car was found locked away in a mass grave of classic super cars next to 60 other exclusive machines in a quiet French village, apparently under a pile of old magazines. How would you feel if you entered your grandpa’s old garage and found a collection of rare and ultra-valuable cars in there?

But it gets better. The black Ferrari 250 California is a limited edition model of which only 37 was built. What’s more, this particular California turned out to a celebrity car, as at some point in its tumultuous life it used to belong to actors Gerard Blain and the legendary Alain Delon. Just imagine the kind of action this Ferrari has seen!

From now on though, the old California can look forward to a comfortable life probably in an air conditioned garage. Before that though, a thorough restoration might be in order.
