With only a month to go until the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, car makers are in a bit of a hurry to announce their new models set for debut at the big event. Audi, however, seems uncharacteristically nonchalant, even though they have one of the biggest debuts of the show: the new 2016 Audi R8.
That is probably because they haven’t been that busy with the new R8 and have given it only a mild facelift and slight mechanical tweaks, rather than a complete makeover. That makes sense, because the existing Audi R8 has a fantastic recipe. When you have something that works, you don’t mess with it every time it’s time to update. You just tweak it. And that seems to be what’s going on with the new R8.
Judging by the first leaked pictures of the 2016 Audi R8, the designers have kept the profile of the car intact, but has changed a few of the signature features like the side blades, headlights and the grille to give the car a fresh look. Those LED, or laser probably, headlights combined with the prominent grille make up the new face of Audi. At the back, while the overall looks remains more or less the same as before, new tail lights, diffuser unit and apron will wow any onlooker with their futuristic appearance.
The 2016 Audi R8 gets the same V8 and V10 powertrains as the current model, albeit with heavy revisions and a new hybrid e-tron variant which will take on the likes of Honda NSX and the next Nissan GT-R. The new R8 will be significantly lighter, making use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and carbon fiber instead of aluminum in its construction.
