IAA 2015: Audi e-tron quattro Concept

Audi really could not let the Frankfurt Motor Show pass without showing off their latest achievements in the world of electric motoring which they handily summarize as e-tron. Audi e-tron quattro is the concept they’ve come up with for the IAA, and it is more than just a show car.

According to the Ingolstadt-based automaker, Audi e-tron quattro will be the basis for the brand’s first large-scale production electric car due in 2018. It uses the most advanced electric motors Audi has to offer, and the best battery pack, which provides a range of 310 miles (500 kilometers) on a charge which is the same as the Porsche Mobility E.

The sport SUV is powered by an electric powertrain consisting of three electric motors: One electric motor drives the front axle, the two others act on the rear, for a total output of 320 kW. It can be boosted to 370 kW and 800 Nm of torque momentarily thanks to an overboost function, in which case Audi e-tron quattro sprints from 0 to 62mph in 4.6 seconds and reaches the electronically governed top speed of 130mph.

As for the recharge time, the e-tron Quattro will take around 50 minutes for a full charge with DC electrical current, which is not bad at all. It also has Audi Wireless Charging technology for contactless induction charging. Things are looking good for electric cars at this year’s IAA, especially in terms of charging time, which seems to be dropping rapidly.
