One of the coolest and most desirable new cars to make its debut at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, for us, was the Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet. We like this thing because in many ways it reminds us of the fabulous CLK55 AMG of the olden days as a high-performance, four-seater soft-top.
We also like the Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet because it is currently the only properly good-looking drop-top Mercedes-Benz. They make loads of them, but for some reason they all have fatal flaws in their designs. The SL is ungainly, the SLC is just plain ugly, the E-Cabrio is neither here nor there, and while the S-Cabrio is all right, it’s way too extravagant and expensive.
That leaves us with the Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet which offers the perfect size for a four-seat, soft-top convertible with dashing looks, a fairly reasonable price tag given the style and the performance it delivers, and a cool and playful character. The car is powered by a 4.0-litre eight-cylinder biturbo engine which makes 476 hp in normal and 510 hp in S guise, and can be ordered with all-wheel-drive for the sure-footed performance that propels you from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds.
