Not long after setting a world record for the fastest electric car in the world at the Nurburgring, NIO EP9 is back at it, this time setting a record for the fastest autonomous lap ever. The venue for this stunt was Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, and the time 2 minutes 40.33 seconds.

The driver-less NIO EP9 went round COTA at an amazing pace, clocking a top speed of 160 mph. EP9 also beat the fastest lap time for a production car WITH a driver at COTA, clocking 2 minutes 11.30 seconds and reaching a top speed of 170 mph. The reason for this superb performance is four high-performance inboard motors and four individual gearboxes, delivering 1 megaWatt of power which is around 1,360 PS.

Performance-wise, NIO EP9 has a 0-124 mph in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 194 miles per hour if you dare push it. Also mind-bending is the recharge time for the interchangeable battery pack, which is just 45 minutes and provides a range of 265 miles on a single charge – although that is definitely not race track range.
