The launch of a third Prologue concept at the Shanghai Motor Show is sort of the conclusive proof you needed to believe the future of Audi design will invariably be effected by this model. The latest model, Audi Prologue Allroad is essentially an all-wheel-drive Prologue Avant boasting a pretty meaty plug-in hybrid powertrain.

On paper, the hybrid powertrain in the Audi Prologue Allroad appears to be too good to be true. It delivers an astounding 734 horsepower “low consumption,” according to Audi and it might do that in concept form. Then again, is a production application of this system manages like 70 percent of that, that will still be an achievement worth celebrating for a week.

The hybrid system in this car is actually nothing too fancy like that of the BMW i8 or Porsche 918. It consists of a 4.0 TFSI V8 engine from the RS series, coupled with an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 734 PS of system power and 900 Nm (663.8 lb-ft) of system torque, which is enough for a 0-100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds. Audi claims the system can do up to 117 mpg with CO2 emissions of 56 g/km, and 33 miles of pure electric drive.

The design of Audi Prologue Allroad might look identical to the Avant at first glance, but this being an Allrad it sits considerably higher than the normal model and boasts larger 22-inch wheels. Distinctive LED lights on the front and rear of the vehicle set it further apart from the other members of the Prologue family, while a minimalistic cabin with digital instrument panels hints at what you can expect from the Audis of the future in terms of interior design.
