Ford released the first official details and images of the 2012 Focus ECOnetic, a new model that is set to become Europe’s most fuel efficient compact car.

Before we get to the details, let’s review some nerdalicious numbers: 80mpg – 3.5 litres per 100 kilometre – CO2 emissions of less than 95g/km. Obviously Ford couldn’t rely just on the available fuel saving technologies, so this car introduces new and highly advanced methods, which will soon be used in other cars as well.

The main reason for this incredible figures is the 1.6-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi diesel engine which is further optimized for the ECOnetic with new injection system and turbocharger, enhanced charge air cooling and friction reduction technologies. It is also equipped with systems like Auto-Start-Stop, Smart Regenerative Charging, Ford Eco Mode and Shift Indicator Light.

But that’s not all. The new aerodynamic package with standard Active Grille Shutter, ultra-low rolling resistance tyres and revised final drive ratio also play a major part, each contributing a little bit to the over all fuel efficiency. The new Focus ECOnetic will be available in both stylish five-door and estate bodystyles.

As for the power, this engine which features common-rail fuel injection system and eight-hole nano sac injectors, makes 105 PS which is fairly enough for a car of this type given its purpose. It is is paired with Ford’s six-speed Durashift manual transmission. Other new, or completely revised, features to enhance fuel efficiency include:

  • New variable geometry turbocharger design
  • Reduced engine friction from low-friction piston ring coatings and variable flow oil pump
  • Additional reduction in engine losses from low inertia vacuum pump and asymmetric crank sprocket design
  • Updated emissions system combining a diesel NOx-reducing catalyst with a coated Diesel Particulate Filter system

One new and innovative feature of the car is of course the Active Grille Shutter – an advanced new system that optimises aerodynamics by using vents to control airflow through the grille to the cooling system and engine compartment. If air is required to cool the engine the vents are opened; but if no airflow is needed, the vents are shut, thereby significantly reducing aerodynamic drag.  When fully closed, the reduction in drag means that the Active Grille Shutter can reduce CO2 emissions by two per cent.

In addition to what mentioned, the Focus ECOnetic includes:

  • Electric Power Assisted Steering
  • Low-friction engine and transmission oils
  • Low tension Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD)
  • Thermal Management Systems to optimise warm-up

The car will be launched form early 2012.
