Earlier this month Porsche announced they are developing a new 911 RSR race car based on the new 911 991-series. Now they reveal that big things are planned for this car. It’s not just selling to privateers, Porsche Factory Team will be using it too.
And they will be competing in the GTE category in the 2013 World Endurance Championship (WEC) with it, as well as the Le Mans 24 Hours. Must be quite a car then. Last time a Porsche factory team took part in Le Mans was in 1998, and of course they won.
After that they never felt confident enough to compete in Le Mans again, until now and with the 991. Porsche AG Team Manthey will be running two Porsche 911 RSR race cars next yea, tackling the GTE series as well as the big race in France. No plans have been confirmed yet for ALMS.
“The new 911 RSR is currently being developed by our engineers and tested by our works drivers,” said Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. “What better time could there be to introduce the new car than in the 50th anniversary year of the Porsche 911.”
