In a rather unusual move Ferrari hires Eddy Cue, Apple’s head of Internet software and services. This was a personal decision by Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo. Luca has made unusual decisions before, and none of them let Ferrari down in any way or form. So this one should be good too.

The question is what an Apple executive can do for Ferrari? One answer to that question can be upgrading Ferrari’s infotainment system, which as every Ferrari owner will tell you, is not that good. Ferrari needs to upgrade its technology infrastructure, and Eddy seems to be the right guy for the job. Mind you, Mr. Cue’s latest effort, Apple Maps, was a bit of a mess.

Ferrari is also fascinated by the natural sophistication and elegance of Apple’s products. Maybe they want some of that design ingenuity in their cars.

Ferrari recently posted an all-time high profit record for the first nine months of 2012. By the looks of things, they are investing that fortune in improving their products.

“I am pleased and proud to become a member of the board. I have personally dreamed of owning a Ferrari since I was 8 years old and have been lucky to be an owner for the past 5 years. I continue to be awed by the world-class design and engineering that only Ferrari can do,” said Eddy Cue.
