America is not really the place for hot hatchbacks. But in recent years and thanks to cars like the Mazdaspeed3 and VW GTi, the idea of a fast, practical and affordable car has been getting more and more appealing. So Motor Trend put two of the greatest hot hatches currently available in the U.S. up against each other in a thorough test. It’s the new Ford Focus ST versus the old but still charming Mazdaspeed3.

One thing that is common among all hot hatchbacks is the funny face. These cars are built for young people and they generally quite like funny looking cars, so it’s OK. That’s the thing about hatchbacks. Unlike sedans and coupe that are like tuxedos, these machines are like T shirts. Nobody expects them to be serious.
