Finally, the first product of Hyundai’s new N sub-brand, the division created to make fun cars, comes out of hiding. It’s the 2018 Hyundai i30 N and it brings with it sharp and understated sporty looks, a cool and functional cabin, and 275 horsepower backed by a carefully engineered chassis.

The Korean engineers who built the 2018 Hyundai i30 N maintain that their priority was not getting the best numbers out of this car, but rather making a hot hatch that could be used everyday and would set your pulse racing every time you drove it. To this end they started with the nice and practical i30 and gave it a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers up to 275 PS and 353 Nm torque. The N is front-whee-drive, and it comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.

What makes Hyundai i30 N what its makers claim is not just the engine. They have pent a lot of time perfecting the aero kit with front and rear spoilers and carefully designed ducts. But the best part of the effort has been spent on the chassis. The goodness here begins with 18-inch Michelin or 19-inch Pirelli high-performance Hyundai N tyres and continues with a direct steering, Electronic Controlled Suspension (ECS), Electronic Limited Slip Differential (E-LSD), Launch Control and special Electronic Stability Program.

All of this makes the i30 N not just a good sports car on the street, but also a formidable weapon on the race track. This was put to the test at this year’s ADAC 24-hours race on the Nürburgring, a place the i30 N is intimately familiar with as it has spent 10,000 km going around it during development. Other highlights of Hyundai i30 N include rear spoiler with triangular brake light, dual muffler exhaust, comfy sports seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless inductive charging pad for mobile phones and the latest safety features.
