In the past ten years Porsche was so busy making SUV and four-door models and actually making money that they almost forgot about their legacy as a sportscar manufacturer. Now though with new management and Arab money they are going back to what their supposed to do, and what they are best at. Here’s the the new Boxter Spyder, the ultimate version of the firm’s cheapest model which will debut at this year’s L.A. Auto Show.
Porsche had two cars in mind while designing the Boxter Spyder, first the magnificent 550 Spyder and then the RS Spyder prototype racing car. It’s a swell mix of both which has turned out as a pure sportscar, Porsche-style!
At 1,275 kg and 320 hp, the Spyder is a real racing car for the roads. It’s even faster than a standard 911 Carrera. This power comes from a 3.4-litre flat-six engine with Direct Fuel Injection which sits right in the middle of the car. Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph – with the roof open.
Porsche Boxter Spyder will go on sale as sson as February 2010 starting at 53,100 Euro in Europe, however if you add the VAT and other expenses it’ll reach you in the market for 63,404 Euro! Blame the EU for that!
