Hyundai continues offering great things with the new generation Sonata by unveiling the new 2.0T edition at the 2010 New York Auto Show. This model has an astonishing 274-horsepower, but all this power comes form a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of just 2.0 liter! Because it’s small, it’s efficient and does 34 mpg. Great!
You see this engine is the 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged gasoline direct-injection (GDI) which has been fitted with a turbo and comes with with a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control. So it can deliver 274 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 269 lb-ft of torque from1800-4500 rpm while returning 22 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. With this engine available, there’s no logical reason remained why you should buy a diesel or a hybrid instead.
Hyundai’s turbocharged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that when combined with the GDI system results in instantaneous power delivery. Twin-scroll turbochargers have traditionally been used on more expensive high performance engines, but as with GDI, Hyundai has chosen once again to apply this efficient technology in high volume to its most popular model.
The twin-scroll turbocharger design has several other advantages over traditional, single-scroll turbocharging systems, including:
