Porsche officials have confirmed that the German sportscar maker is developing an all-new flat-four engine, which can be applied to the next Boxster and Cayman. The Four-cylinder boxer was first considered for Porsche’s upcoming small roadster, but then they realized it makes complete sense to use it in the Boxster as well.
Now, as far as we remember the current Boxster only worked with the 3.2 liter six-cylinder engine and the 2.7 was, how can we put it, rubbish! So one would imagine that a flat-four won’t be up to the job to make a proper sportscar, but Porsche promises it’ll be a good one. They say this 2.5 liter unit can develop up to 360 bhp if fitted with a turbo.
Cool, but they also say they might also use it in the 911 and that’s not cool! We don’t care if it can develop the same power as the flat-six or that it’ll be efficient, the 911 always had a flat-six. And ‘four-cylinder 911’ doesn’t sound right somehow! Of course Porsche says they are just thinking about it and for now they’re sticking to the flat-six.

Back in the 60s, there was a 912 model that had a 4 cylinder.
