As you know Porsche will unveil a new hybrid model at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and this is not it! This is the Porsche Boxster E, a prototype for the electric sportscar Porsche has been developing for years.
They’ve only revealed the car for the Germans so accurate specs and details are yet to emerge, but we can tell you that is has two electric motors putting out a combined 180 kW. It also benefits from 29 kWh lithium-ion batteries that feed the motors and get charged every time you brake or release the accelerator pedal.
Normally a Boxster should be rear-wheel-drive, but given the fact that the E has two electric motors one would imagine it uses the same system that most high performance EVs use with one motor running the rear wheels and the other powering the front ones. Or both motors may send the power to the rear wheels.
The rest of the car is apparently the same as the Boxster S. But when this prototype finally becomes a production model in near future it will certainly use a new look and possibly a new name. Porsche will reveal more facts on their zero-emission sportscars program at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
