McLaren finally throws in the towel and accepts their new MP4 is too much of an engineer’s car and they need to change it, or everybody will just go and buy Ferrari 458 instead!

Ever since the car was introduced, every single automotive media that spent some time with the MP4 said the same thing. That the McLaren is superb to drive and hellishly fast, but lacks emotion and that sweet sense of drama that Ferrari 458 offers in buckets.

It seems McLaren engineers had been kept in a locked room and told to develop the best of what’s technically possible. And they did, but if they had studied the 458, the car that the MP4 is built to rival, they’d realize they are missing the whole point of a supercar, by a mile.

So they are going to change it. They say the car that customers will receive is very different than the one you read about in magazines or seen on Top Gear. It’ll have a sharper throttle and a sportier exhaust noise. It won’t be any faster, it’s already fast enough, but it will be more fun to drive. McLaren says the changes will only be applied to the Track mode of the car and you won’t notice the in normal driving.

We think they should change the name as well. These days even laptops don’t have such dreary names!
