Ford revealed the official pricing of the 2013 Shelby GT500 Mustang on its online customizer website, putting the final nail in Camaro ZL1’s coffin. The new Shelby, all 650-hp of it, is priced at only $54,200. There’s a $795 destination charge to add to that price, which brings the total to $54,995, exactly the same as the ZL1 Coupe price.
So what Ford is saying, basically, is that for the same amount of money as the ZL1 they give you an extra 70-hp and top speed of over 200mph. That is pretty tempting, even for the most loyal Camaro fans.
If Ford didn’t have this beef with Camaro, they’d sell the car for higher, as they are doing with the convertible version of the GT500. That will cost you $59,200 plus the $795 destination charge.
Options by which you can beef up your Shelby even further include the $3,495 SVT Performance package with stuff like Torsen limited-slip differential, Bilstein adjustable dampers, and bigger wheels, a $1995 Panoramic glass roof, the $2,340 Electronics package with HD radio and navigation, $1295 Shaker audio system, and $1,595 Recaro leather seats.
Truth be told you don’t need any of that extra garnish. What you want is that 5.8-liter V8 aluminum-block engine with 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque.
