As a tribute to the late Carroll Shelby, the new 2013 Shelby Gt500 Mustang appears at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The most powerful Mustang ever made will be driven up the Goodwood hill by guest race drivers. This is the GT500’s first public appearance outside United States, and it’s in a country were people are not really fond of muscle cars. But a 660 horsepower car is interesting whichever way you cut it.
Besides the massively powerful 5.8 liter supercharged V8, the GT500 also benefits from high-performance components such as Brembo six-piston front caliper brake system, special gearing and a racing launch control system. But as learned from this track test, the brakes are not really up to the job and start fading after just one or two laps.
Another feature of Ford’s booth at the Goodwood FoS is the Focus ST. Their stand will have a strong Sweeney theme to mark the Ford Focus ST’s starring role in the new film, which is released in the UK in September. Also going up the hill will be the iconic Zakspeed Capri is also set to sprint up the hill, challenging the 1.16-mile hillclimb speed record of 41.6 seconds, set by Nick Heidfeld in 1999.
