The British version of Opel Mokka, which itself is the European version of Buick Encore, goes on sale in the UK today, starting from £16,995. This sub-compact SUV B-segment is sort of like a jacked-up hatchback, and that is a good thing. You get the compact size and the light weight, but you also get the extra versatility brought by the ride height and four-wheel-drive system (if specified).
The Mokka – yes, it’s named after a certain type of coffee – launches with three engines, including a 1.6-litre petrol that produces 115PS and 155Nm of torque and thanks to start/stop averages 43.5mpg, a 1.4-litre turbo with 140PS and a 1.7 liter CDTi diesel engine developing 130PS.
One of the best things about the little Mokka is the comprehensive list of active and passive safety features. In addition to stuff like Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Forward Collision Alert, as well as a rear-view camera, it gets Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control, plus adaptive forward lighting system.
In terms of practicality, the Mokka has 19 storage locations, 60:40 split rear seats, and an all-up load space of 1,372 litres with the rear seats folded down.
