From September 24 you will be able to buy a new powerful little car in the UK that will give the established hot hatches a run for their money. It’s the Hyundai Veloster Turbo SE, and it’s priced from £21,995. Well, it’s not a hatchback as such. The Veloster is actually a 1+2 door coupe, a concept that is supposed to add more practicality to the mix.
Power comes from a 1.6 liter T-GDI unit featuring a high-compression, twin-scroll turbocharger, for an output of 186PS (184bhp) and 195lb ft (265Nm) of torque. That means a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 133 mph. Not exactly inspiring, but not bad either, especially for a 20 grand car.
Where the Veloster Turbo really shines is in terms of economy, as it offers CO2 emissions of just 157g/km with fuel economy of 40.9mpg on the combined cycle. And as with every Korean car, the Veloster’s value for money factor is an ace up its sleeve.
This is the only car in this segment that is offered with factory-finished matt paint jobs. They are quite pricey though, at £445 and £525 for pearl and matt gray finishes. The Turbo Veloster also comes with unique visual features over the standard car, such as 18-inch wheels, bigger rear spoiler, twin exhausts and diffuser.
A tilt and slide Panoramic sunroof is available for £950, but Hyundai’s 7-inch touchscreen satellite navigation system, incorporating media centre and reverse parking camera with parking guidance, comes as standard.
