The next big thing to come out of Ferrari’s factory in Maranello is a new coupe-convertible model – the next California. Prototypes have already been dispatched to put the car’s new powertrain – which is said to be turbocharged – to test.
Those who have heard these test mules flying pass have reported they definitely don’t sound like a normal, naturally-aspirated V8 engine. The unique whistle of a meaty turbocharger is a telltale sign of what’s going on under the new Cali’s bonnet.
There are other signs as well. The prototypes that have been spotted all features a raised bonnet and extra cooling vents – more evidence that forced induction is the case.
Chances are Ferrari is working on a downsized version of the current California’s V8 engine to share with Maserati. Even though using forced induction may sound like a compromise – after all, a turbo engine won’t have the same immediacy and feel of a naturally aspirated unit – they kinda have to give in if they are to comply with the new emission rules.
Nothing is for sure right now, and seeing as the next California is not due until at least two years, Ferrari has plenty of time to test different solutions. More details @Autocar.
